COLUMBIA, S.C. — Early Monday morning, staff at Turbeville Correctional Institution found inmate Luis Antonio Maldanado, 46, unresponsive in his cell. He didn’t make it—officials pronounced him dead right there at the prison.
Right now, the South Carolina Department of Corrections has labeled his death a suspected homicide. Their Inspector General’s Office is handling the investigation, with help from the State Law Enforcement Division’s Crime Scene Unit and the Clarendon County Coroner.
An autopsy will show exactly how and why Maldanado died, but so far, officials haven’t shared much else. There’s no word yet on possible suspects, what might have happened in his cell, or what conditions were like where he lived.
Turbeville Correctional sits in Clarendon County and is run by the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
We’re keeping an eye on this story and will share more as soon as state or local authorities offer new details.
