FLORENCE, SC – A Florence County woman has been sentenced in connection with a hit-and-run crash from July 2023 that left a grandmother seriously injured.
Nita Sheree Matthews, 50, pleaded guilty on December 15, 2025, to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in great bodily injury in a crash that badly injured a woman who was pushing her disabled car off the road. The plea was entered before S.C. Circuit Court Judge Paul Burch in Florence.
At the sentencing on January 5, 2026, Matthews was given eight years in prison, with one year to be served and the remainder suspended. After her prison term, she will be on five years of probation. Under the terms of probation, she may be released from supervision early if she pays $20,000 in restitution or if probation services determine early termination is appropriate.
The victim, who required hospitalization and surgery following the crash, was present and addressed the court during sentencing.
Matthews’ sentence reflects her plea to a serious hit-and-run charge under South Carolina law, which carries potential prison time, fines, and other legal consequences.
