CHARLESTON, S.C. — South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis Jr. has called for a formal review of materials in the Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) system, saying some content may violate state standards for publicly funded library collections.
Loftis, in a social media post Thursday, singled out the graphic novel Big Hard Sex Criminals Vol. 2: Deluxxxe and asked the South Carolina State Library to determine whether the book and others like it comply with South Carolina law and the provisions governing state aid to county libraries.
“Taxpayer dollars should not be used to support obscene material,” Loftis said. “If the State Library determines that the system is not in compliance, I will immediately withhold state funds until compliance is restored.”
Library leadership responded by defending CCPL’s commitment to serving the full range of community needs while ensuring age-appropriate access.
CCPL Executive Director was quoted responding, “Our mission is to provide diverse materials that reflect the interests and needs of all patrons. We have clear policies in place to ensure that adult titles are appropriately located and that children’s areas contain only age-appropriate content.”
The State Library has been asked to review the complaint and report back before any funding decisions are made. CCPL officials stated they will cooperate with the review.
