Clarendon County Fire Rescue Celebrates Service, Excellence, and Leadership at Annual Christmas Banquet

By Palmetto State Auditor Staff

MANNING, S.C. — Clarendon County Fire Rescue gathered on December 9 at Station 1 for its annual Christmas Banquet, an evening dedicated to honoring service, sacrifice, and the quiet courage that defines the department’s mission.

The event brought together firefighters, officers, paramedics, volunteers, and families for a night of reflection and recognition, highlighting both individual achievement and the strength of the fire rescue family as a whole.

During the ceremony, the department presented its annual awards, recognizing excellence across multiple roles.

Rookie of the Year was awarded to Bradley Welch for his outstanding performance and commitment during his first year of service.

Firefighter of the Year was presented to Nic Daugherty, recognizing his leadership, dependability, and dedication to both fellow firefighters and the citizens of Clarendon County.

Paramedic of the Year was awarded to Casey Melone for exceptional professionalism and lifesaving care provided in emergency medical situations throughout the year.

Officer of the Year was presented to Courtney Atkinson for exemplary leadership, accountability, and service within the department.

A special moment of the evening was the induction of three longtime members into the Clarendon County Fire Rescue Hall of Fame. Josh Jordan, Kirk Hall, and Greg Holliday were honored for their years of dedicated service and lasting impact on the department and the community.

The department also recognized outstanding service across its divisions with Excellence Awards. Richard Step received the Division 1 Excellence Award, Brandon McGee was honored with the Division 2 Excellence Award, and John Buchko received the Division 3 Excellence Award.

Throughout the evening, officers were pinned for well-earned promotions, and volunteers were recognized for exceptional service, representing countless hours of commitment and compassion given without expectation of recognition.

The banquet also served as a time of reflection on the values that define Clarendon County Fire Rescue. Department leadership emphasized that true courage is often quiet and unrecognized, showing up during late-night calls, in emergency gear, with tired eyes and determined hearts, and that every member of the organization embodies that courage.

One of the most meaningful moments of the night was Chief Johnson’s farewell address as he prepares for retirement in January. His remarks reflected years of leadership, guidance, and dedication, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire the department.

Clarendon County Fire Rescue expressed sincere appreciation to the Sumter Fire Department and South Lynches Fire Rescue for covering stations during the event, allowing on-duty members the opportunity to attend.

As the department looks ahead, the evening reinforced a renewed commitment to one another and to the community they serve, honoring not the spotlight of the job but the heart behind it, the compassion shown on every call, and the strength drawn from working together.
