District 2 Special Election Set Following Passing of Longtime Clarendon County Councilman

By PSA Newsroom Staff

Voters will choose a successor to W.J. Frierson Sr., who served the community for more than 30 years

Clarendon County voters in District 2 will head to the polls this spring to elect a new county council member following the death of William James “W.J.” Frierson Sr., a fixture in local government who represented the district for more than three decades.

State law requires a special election to fill the vacant seat, setting in motion a multi-month process that will give residents the opportunity to choose who will represent them moving forward.

Candidate Filing Opens Mid-January

County officials announced that candidate filing will open at noon on Jan. 16 and close at noon on Jan. 24. Candidates seeking a political party’s nomination must file with the Clarendon County Board of Voter Registration and Elections at 3 S. Church St. in Manning.

A $100 filing fee is required for candidates running in a party primary. All candidates must also submit a Statement of Economic Interests and required campaign disclosure forms to the South Carolina Ethics Commission. While these filings are required by law, failure to submit them does not automatically disqualify a candidate from the election.

Primary and Special Election Dates Announced

If more than one candidate files for a party nomination, a primary election will be held on Tuesday, March 10, with a runoff, if necessary, on March 24. The special election to fill the District 2 seat is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12.

Voters must be registered by April 12 to be eligible to participate in the primary, runoff, or special election.

Polling Locations Remain the Same

Polling places across District 2 will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day. Precincts include Alcolu, Bloomville, Davis Station, Home Branch, Jordan, multiple Manning precincts, Paxville, and Wilson-Foreston. Voting locations will remain consistent with recent elections, according to county officials.

As the filing period approaches, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged as Clarendon County prepares to choose its next District 2 representative.
